How to Price Thrift Flips

Stop guessing. Start pricing based on data, fees, and real margins. Every number matters when your profit depends on the spread.

Step 1: Research Sold Comps

The single most important skill in pricing is checking what an item actually sold for, not what sellers are asking. Active listings represent hope. Sold listings represent reality.

How to Pull Comps on eBay

  1. Search for the item by name, brand, model, or identifying features.
  2. Click "Sold Items" in the filter panel to see completed sales only.
  3. Filter to the last 90 days for current market pricing.
  4. Discard the highest and lowest outliers. Average the middle range.
  5. Note the condition of sold items and match to yours honestly.
If you cannot find at least 3 sold comps in the last 90 days, the item does not have a reliable market. That does not mean it will not sell, but it means you are taking a risk.

Step 2: Factor in All Costs

The selling price is not your profit. Every flip has costs that chip away at your margin. The resellers who last are the ones who account for every dollar before they buy.

Platform Fees

eBay charges approximately 13.25% of the total sale (item + shipping). Poshmark takes a flat 20% (or $2.95 on items under $15). Mercari charges 10% + 2.9% + $0.50 per transaction. Facebook Marketplace is free for local pickup, 5% + $0.40 for shipped items. Always calculate fees before setting your price.

Shipping Costs

Shipping is the margin killer most beginners ignore. A $5 profit disappears when shipping costs $12. Weigh your items with packaging. Use calculated shipping for heavy items. For clothing, poly mailers + USPS First Class (under 1 lb) keeps costs at $4-$6. For heavier items, Priority Mail or FedEx Ground may be cheaper depending on distance.

Materials & Supplies

Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, poly mailers, tissue paper, and labels all cost money. Buy in bulk to keep per-unit costs low. Budget roughly $1-$3 per shipment for materials. This is a real cost that should be factored into every flip calculation.

Time Cost

Your time has value even if you do not assign it a dollar amount. A $5 profit on an item that took 2 hours to source, photograph, list, and ship is not a good flip. Focus on items where the profit justifies the time investment.

Step 3: Set Your Price Strategically

Once you know your costs and comp range, price at the upper end of the sold comp range and enable Best Offer. This gives you the best chance of capturing full value while still allowing negotiation.

Pricing Tiers

Premium

When: Your item is in better condition than most comps, rare variation, or includes extras (original box, accessories).

Action: Price 10-20% above the average sold comp.

Market Rate

When: Your item matches the average condition and completeness of sold comps.

Action: Price at the upper end of the sold comp range with Best Offer enabled.

Quick Sale

When: You need to move inventory for cash flow, the item has been listed 30+ days, or the category is trending down.

Action: Price at or slightly below the average sold comp. Consider auction format for time-sensitive items.

When to Reprice

Review unsold inventory every 30 days. If an item has not attracted offers or watchers, revisit the listing quality first (photos, title keywords, description). If the listing is strong, drop the price by 10-15%. After 60 days with no interest, relist to reset the listing date or cross-list to another platform. Some items are long-tail and may take 3-6 months to sell at the right price. Build enough inventory that slow sellers do not hurt your cash flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What profit margin should I aim for on thrift flips?

A minimum of 50% ROI after all costs (purchase price, platform fees, shipping, and materials). Many experienced resellers target 100-300% ROI. If a flip does not clear 50% margin, it is usually not worth the time investment.

How do I find sold comps for an item?

On eBay, search for the item, then click "Sold Items" under the filter menu. This shows completed sales with actual selling prices. Sort by most recent to get current market pricing. On other platforms, use Poshmark's sold filter or check Mercari's sold tab.

Should I include shipping in my listing price?

It depends on the platform and item. On eBay, offering free shipping can boost search visibility but you need to build shipping costs into your price. For heavy items, calculated shipping is usually better. On Mercari, free shipping promotions drive more sales.
